Rationale
This module was developed following consultation between the DfES (now DCSF) and Early Childhood Studies Degree National Network. The module provides students with an opportunity to work alongside professional practitioners in Ofsted registered settings, further developing their knowledge, skills and competence in working with young children.
Students will be required to identify and attend an appropriate registered setting (0-8 years, principally 0-5 where possible) for one day per week over the academic year at level 5 (minimum 150 hours) in order to experience, participate in and develop competence in a range of tasks associated with practice in an early years setting.
Students will be expected to demonstrate both knowledge and understanding of appropriate ideas relating to the care and education of children as they apply to practice, as well as an ability to work with children and adults in a particular setting.
Students will already have a minimum of 100 hours documented and authenticated relevant practical experience from level four. Students will be expected to reflect on and develop their practice during this module.
Students successfully completing this module and the Early Childhood Studies Degree will be awarded BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies with Practitioner Options. The practice award will not be stand-alone. This award is recognised on the DfES (now DCSF) Early Years Occupational Standards ‘Acceptable Qualifications List’.
