Rationale
This module sets out to investigate the nature, philosophies and significant processes of early childhood, with in-depth exploration of young children within their day-to-day social and cultural environments. The module provides a sound holistic and inclusive base to underpin students’ subsequent academic study of childhood together with the introduction and development of study skills and P4.
Students are presented with opportunities to view childhood from a variety of perspectives, and consider the reasoning that underlies the philosophy of holism. Consideration of children’s rights and more recent interdisciplinary, inclusive and participatory approaches within a broadening context facilitate exploration of influential factors on significant issues within a culturally diverse society. The module also introduces students to strategies for independent learning, enquiry and critical reflection, as empowering vehicles for their intellectual development.
