Rationale
This module seeks to follow on from the level 4 modules “Development and Learning“ and “Children and Health” by providing the student with a more in-depth perspective of the historical, political, cultural, sociological and psychological factors affecting the concepts of child health and well-being. This module seeks to critically explore, as far as possible, the major factors affecting children’s health, beginning with major influences on mortality and morbidity and going on to examine more recent developments in social policy, legislation and healthcare services. It also seeks to provide the student with an in-depth understanding of current issues facing children both with ‘Additional Needs’ in both healthcare and educational settings. As a Level 5 module, this module will extend the process of critical evaluation initiated at level 4, and current UK social policy and legislation relating to inclusive practice will be explored in relation to inclusive and anti-discriminatory ideologies.
Students will further develop their theoretical understanding of both social policy, sociological and psychological models in relation to preventative healthcare and health promotion and develop their critical awareness of the multiple factors which impact upon child health as a whole, as well as having several opportunities within the context of the module for in-depth exploration of a chosen area of interest in relation to Additional Needs. They will also have the opportunity to critically explore more contemporary issues relating to child health.
