FdSc Building Services Engineering

Overview

This course is designed to prepare you for a range of technical, professional and management career disciplines in construction and the built environment. The course will provide you with the opportunity to explore develop and expand your knowledge through projects, simulations and presentations.

The emphasis is on your participation. You will be encouraged to carry out research and work with others as part of a team. You will be encouraged to demonstrate an ability to work independently without supervision, solve problems and interact effectively with individuals and groups in the work situation. 

Building services engineering is an expanding specialism in today's construction industry, and deals with important aspects such as sustainability, new technology, the installation of specialist services and building design factors. The aim of these courses is to offer students rigorous theoretical and practical training as a base for their professional development or further study.

The construction sector in which the student works will form an integral part of these courses, providing relevance to the content of the course and enhancing employability in all parts of the sector.

Full-time students are expected to find a suitable work placement in the construction sector and assistance is available for this. 

On successful completion of the course students progress to careers as building services technicians, or work in construction management.

Content and Modules

The course considers team working in the construction industry, problem solving, analysis, relating theory to practice, understanding current thinking in building services engineering, and understanding the concept of sustainability as it applies to building services.

Modules studied include: Building Services Technology, Heating and Ventilation, Thermofluids and Heat Transfer, Sustainable Practices, Information Technology, Professional Practices, Electrical Installation and Lighting Design, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Building Management Systems and Controls, and Contractual and Procurement Procedures.

Further Information

The course team will employ a balanced range of teaching strategies in delivering the programme. This will include tutor-led presentations, case-studies and guest speakers from specialist areas of the construction industry and practical sessions via large and small group work and presentations on “real-world” construction projects.

Most assessment is via work-based projects, reports, presentations and case studies, although there may be some more traditional essays and examinations in a few instances.The content of the course has been designed to meet the recommendations of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers.

The construction sector in which the student works will form an integral part of the Foundation degree, providing relevance to the content of the course and enhancing employability in all parts of the sector.
