BSc (Hons) Applied Computing (Progression Route)

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Applied Computing course provides a one year progression route to an honours degree for students who have studied a foundation degree in computing, such as the FdSc Applied Computing| at UCS, or elsewhere.

Covering key advanced topics software development, Internet technology, network security, and IT strategy, the course equips students for a career in the computing industry. The course includes a project module that provides the student with an opportunity to specialise in an aspect of computing that is of particular interest to the individual. The course is delivered within fully equipped computing labs that provide access to industry-standard computer hardware and software.

These courses help students develop vocationally related technical skills and abilities, along with academic insight and understanding. They are designed to reflect contemporary computing practice.

Content and Modules

BSc (Hons) Applied Computing is designed to emphasise advanced technical issues such as network security and commercial software development, strategic and operational decisions and provides the opportunity to focus the skills and insights gained within a double credit practical project. The course also includes scope for specialism within specific areas of Computing.

Modules include: IT Strategy & Change; Network Security; Software Research and Development; Advanced Internet Technology; Dissertation.

Further Information

Assessment is through a variety of methods including examinations, assignments, group projects and presentations. Assessment will normally focus on practical as well as academic abilities.

These courses provide students with relevant and up to date skills required to enter the IT professions. Students completing Applied Computing may wish to progress to a Masters degree.
