BSc (Hons) Midwifery (Shortened)

Overview

This course is designed for registered nurses to train as midwives. UCS offers an exciting environment, within which to study Midwifery. The staff that guide students through their studies are well qualified with a wide range of experience in the discipline. There are excellent links between UCS and the local trusts where students gain clinical experience. The course supports students in developing a range of knowledge, skills, values and competences, which meet the professional requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

This course enables successful students to gain registration as a midwife on the Nursing and Midwifery Professional Register.

This qualification provides opportunities for employment as a midwife in community and hospital settings within the NHS and in private or independent practice. Future careers in clinical practice, research, management and education are all possible options. Students are also able to work across the European Union, plus other countries where this qualification is recognised.

For those that do not meet the entry requirements of this course but are interested in becoming a Midwife, UCS offers a three years BSc (Hons) Midwifery. |

Content and Modules

The course consists of three modules which are a combination of theory and practice. The first six months of study provides students with an introduction to core theories, principles and skills which are relevant to midwifery practice. In the second and third module the course builds on previous learning and focuses in greater depth on the knowledge, skills, values and competences required for professional midwifery practice.

Clinical placements are an integral part of the course and account for 58 per cent of the programme. Experience will be gained in a variety of hospital and community environments.

The main site for the academic component of the programme is the Ipswich Campus. Students will have the opportunity to gain clinical experience in one of three geographical locations; Bury St Edmunds, Great Yarmouth or Ipswich.

Students are assessed in both theory and practice which will include project work, presentations, written and practical examinations and essays.

Entry requirements:

Current NMC registration as a nurse level 1 (adult)

Diploma level Nursing (Adult) or evidence of recent study equivalent to 60 level 5 credits (a portfolio of evidence will be required).

A minimum of 6 months full-time (or equivalent) post-registration experience within the last 2 years

Subject to interview

Health checks and Criminal Records Bureau checks will be undertaken in accordance with regulations of the Nursing and Midwifery Council and faculty policies.
