Introduction to Autism

Overview

This module aims to:

  • Critically explore the nature of autism and its impact on the life of the individual and their family
  • Critically examine issues relating to the concept of inter-professional working
  • Critically investigate current trends in service delivery in autism
  • Critically identify and develop effective strategies of support for people with autism and their families

  • Services for children on the autistic spectrum
  • Adolescence and relationships
  • Adulthood, work and later years
  • Emotional and mental health
  • Societal Approaches to autism – media
  • Support strategies for people with autism and their families.

 
How will I be assessed?

The student will be given a choice of three hypothetical case studies each focusing on an individual with autism. Case Study one focuses on childhood autism. Case Study two focuses on autism in adolescence and Case Study three focuses on autism in adulthood. By applying their chosen case study students should demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the health and social needs of that individual. They should divide their answers under four separate headings.

1. Family Support
2. Interprofessional Collaboration
3. Approaches to Care
4. Recommendations for Practice

The case study must be evidence based and include critical analysis of the current models of practice. It should also demonstrate an awareness of the promotion of non-discriminatory practice.

Submission Hand in at the end of the module period on the identified date.
Weighting 100%
