Using and generating evidence for developing Learning Disability practice: Becoming a researcher- practitioner

Overview

This module aims to:

  • Provide participants with an overview of the research processes in scientific and social research
  • Contextualize the learning from within current ‘real world’ and relevant research in the field of learning disability
  • Support the technical development of the learner as an evidence-based practitioner
  • Provide knowledge in how practice development could occur through the application of evidence and generation of local research

  • An introduction or review of the research process
  • An overview of clinical trial techniques in learning disability
  • An overview of qualitative approaches to research in learning disability
  • How to read research as evidence for practice in learning disability services
  • Problems associated with clinical trials as evidence
  • Problems associated with participatory approaches
  • The ethical challenge of research in learning disability
  • Clinical audit and research: What’s the difference?
  • What does being a researcher-practitioner mean? Broadening out reflection as informal research in the practice setting
  • Research as action for self development and for organizational gain
  • Integrating evidence based practice alongside quality standards in care planning
  • Keeping things simple in a complex field of practice

How will I be assessed?

The critical appraisal of a piece of research evidence pertinent to the student’s area of practice which explores its value as evidence and the factors that may influence its successful application to practice

Word limit: 3500

Submission: Hand in at the end of the module period on the identified date
