Palliative Care for Children Young People and their Families

Overview

This module aims to:

  • Enable the practitioner to appreciate the life pattern of the child / young person experiencing a life limiting illness and the provision of holistic care, within a framework of collaborative care delivery systems.
  • Enable the practitioner to critically review current practice and evaluate the relevance to their practice, of research and developments in palliative care and end of life provision.

Content and Modules

What will I study?

Critical evaluation of research, reflection and a holistic approach to care will be threaded throughout the module.

Module introduction and assessment issues.
Philosophies /principles of child/ young people palliative care.
Challenges to providing palliative care for this client group.
Role of the interprofessional team.
Frameworks of care delivery.
Communication, interactions/ interventions packages of care.
Symptom management.
Rights, responsibilities, consent issues of children/young people.
Ethical, legal and professional issues.
Accountability /responsibility.
Professional relationships.
End of life care.
Models of loss/death.
Bereavement / support.
Self -awareness/ personal support.
Maintaining professional and personal boundaries.
Module evaluation.

How will I be assessed?

A presentation (15 minutes) demonstrating a critical awareness of the palliative care services offered/ developed within the student’s area of practice. (50% weighting).
Word equivalent: 2,000 words
Submission: Towards the end of the semester in which the module is taught.

If you are already registered on a diploma or degree programme it is advisable to inform your course leader that you will be undertaking this module. This will enable your course leader to undertake the vital task of tracking your academic journey.
