Overview

This module aims to:

  1. Provide practitioners in acute and primary based care with a clearer understanding of the nature of learning disability
  2. To enable practitioners in acute and primary care to appreciate factors which increase risk of unnoticed complications
  3. Provide knowledge and skills for practitioners in acute and primary care which enhance the quality of care provided
  4. Develop an interprofessional and cross-disciplinary forum for expertise and information sharing

Content and Modules

What will I study?

Defining learning disability and its most common presentations
Aetiology and Prevalence of learning disability in the general population
Associated conditions to learning disability
Policies of human rights, community care, and equal access to services
Understanding behaviour as a form of communication
Communication strategies; signs, symbols, and images
Communication strategies; makaton, total communication
Epidemiology of increased health risk factors in learning disability conditions
Supporting families of people with learning disabilities
Managing the care needs of people in unfamiliar environments
An overview of the professionals and agencies that may be involved in the life of a person with a learning disability

How will I be assessed?

Drawing on current research evidence and personal observation, an essay that critically analyses the current care delivery to people with learning disabilities in acute or primary care and which offers ways in which that care could be enhanced.
