Overview
The NHS contraception services, operating primarily within General Practice or community-based clinics in the UK, are used by an estimated six million individuals each year. The need for appropriate, accessible and comprehensive services is imperative to maintain and promote reproductive sexual health and utilisation of family planning services.
Content and Modules
Level 6 (Undergraduate)
Pre-requisites: Access to relevant clinical experience with patients/clients.
Exclusions: This module cannot be studied again at a different academic level.
This module will encompass theoretical aspects of contraception, sexual health and abortion. Its specific focus will be to enable participants to provide general and opportunistic education and advice on these subjects and determine referral mechanisms to the appropriate agencies. This module will be available not only to nurses, midwives and health visitors, but could provide valuable shared learning opportunites with youth workers, probation officers, social workers, community drugs team members and police officers, so enriching cross professional dialogue. It is particularly suited to health care practitioners with a public health role, with a part to play in promoting health and assisting individuals make positive choices regarding parenting and accessing health services.
Aims

Evaluate the contribution of family planning and reproductive health to individuals, to family life and to the well being of society.

Enable health care professionals to provide contemporary opportunistic contraceptive and reproductive sexual health care advice.

Appraise issues of availability and access to contraception and reproductive health care services within their locality.
Learning Outcomes

Relate the anatomy, physiology and pathology to contraception and reproductive sexual health.

Evaluate factors influencing local and national provision of reproductive sexual health related services and critically analysed availability, access and appropriateness of these services.

Debate the relative merits in relation to the management of fertility, fertility control and promotion of positive sexual health for individuals, the family and community groups.

Provide contemporary and effective education on general contraceptive and sexual health matters.

Appraise the impact of research in relation to best practice.
Summative Assessment
A critical comparative review (100% weighting)
2 cases from practice within contraception and reproductive sexual health care to explore and critically analyse issues of application of theory to practice. Word Limit: 4000 words.
Level 7 (Postgraduate)
This module will enhance and develop theoretical aspects of contraception, sexual health and abortion. Its specific focus will be to enable participants to provide general and opportunistic education and advice on these subjects and determine referral mechanisms to the appropriate agencies. This module will be available not onoy to nurses, midwives and health visitors, but could procide valuable shared learning opportunities with youth workers, probation officers, social workers, community drugs team members and police officers, so enriching cross professional dialogue. Summative Assessment
A critical review (100% Weighting)
Of contraceptive and sexual health care provision to evaluate and synthesise issues of application of theory to practice. Word Limit 3500 words.
