Level 5 (Undergraduate)
Pre-requisites: Access to health care work context.
Excluded Combinations: This module cannot be studies again at a different level.
To be effective, practitioners will need to increase their level of awareness and develop competence in a range of knowledge and skills, which are relevant to health promotion and public health practice. This module is offered therefore at level 5, to facilitate the acquisition of the necessary competence and confidence, so that practitioners are able to make a positive contribution to the health improvement agenda.
Aims

Provide opportunities for students to analyse a range of key theoretical perspectives, relating to the concepts and principles of health promotion and public health.

Facilitate the development of a range of knowledge, understanding, values, skills and competence which underpin health promotion and public health practice, relevant to the student’s work context.

Develop understanding of the interconnectedness of global health and the importance of collaboration and partnership in developing and implementing health promotion and public health strategies and initiative.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module the student will be able to:

Discuss and analyse, core concepts, theories, principles and values which are relevant to health promotion and public health practice.

Appraise a range of contemporary health promotion/public health data, evidence and strategies, drawing conclusions about their appropriateness, in relation to the work context.

Analyse the links between risks to health, risk behaviour and the implications for health, wellbeing and health promotion practice.

Apply core principles and evidence base to develop and implement strategies and initiatives for promoting health within the work context and review their effectiveness.
Summative Assessment
Development of a work-based project relating to health promotion needs of an individual or group and recommendations for developing an initiative or strategy for further action. This will include assessment of the health promotion needs of a client/group of clients (patients) and a proposal for the development of an appropriate health promotion intervention, to meet the identified needs, indicating the strengths and limitations of the initiative. Word limit: 4000 words.
Level 6 (Undergraduate)
Excluded Combinations: This module cannot be studied again at a different academic level.
To be effective, practitioners will need to develop competence and a range of expertise, to enable them to facilitate and lead the development and implementation of initiatives for health improvement and wellbeing. This will be an integral part of professional practice in the 21st century.

Summative Assessment
A proposed development of a work-based project relating to the health needs of an individual or group and recommendations for developing an initiative or strategy for further action. This will include an assessment of the health promotion/public health needs of a client/group (population) and the proposed development of an appropriate health promotion intervention to meet the identified needs, indicating the strengths and limitations of the initiative. Word limit: 4000 words.
Level 7 (Postgraduate)
Pre-requisites: None
Excluded Combinations: Previous study of this module at level 6 or level 5.
To be effective, practitioners will need to develop competence and a range of expertise, to enable them to become effective innovators, in facilitating and leading the development and implementation of initiatives for health improvement and wellbeing. This will be an integral part of professional practice in the 21st century.
Aims

Provide opportunities for students to debate and evaluate a range of key theoretical perspectives, relating to the concepts and principles of health promotion, public health and health policy.

Facilitate the development of a range of knowledge, understanding, values, skills and competence which underpin effective leadership and implementation of health promotion and public health practice, relevant to the student’s work context.

Develop understanding of the interconnectedness of global health and the importance of collaboration, partnership and the use of sound evidence to underpin the development and implementation of health promotion and public health strategies and initiative.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module the student will be able to:

Critically evaluate core concepts, theories, principles and values that underpin contemporary health promotion and public health practice.

Critically evaluate a range of health promotion/public health data, evidence and strategies, drawing conclusions about their appropriateness.

Select and integrated core principles and a robust evidence base to inform the development of appropriate initiatives for supporting the health improvement agenda within the work context.

Evaluate the effectiveness of a range of interventions and frameworks, including, collaboration, partnership and community engagement in relation to the health improvement agenda.
Summative Assessment
Critical reflection on a health promotion or public health initiative, which is relevant to your work context, (or a national/local initiative that is known to you).
Critically evaluate the strengths, limitations, threats and opportunities of the initiative, drawing conclusions and proposing recommendations for further action, for health enhancing health improvement. Word limit: 4000 words.
