Applied Pathophysiology for Healthcare Practitioners

Overview

What are the aims of the module?

  • Apply in-depth knowledge of the biological sciences to influence and enhance care of the client group
  • Critically examine a range of research and literature to support healthcare interventions and examine clinical effectiveness.
  • Maintain and develop knowledge of the advances in healthcare practice which have a foundation in applied pathophysiology
  • To enable the student to understand the pathogenesis of disease and the effect of disease on body function
 

Content and Modules

What will I study?

  • Fundamentals of pathophysiology – cell physiology, homeostasis, disease/illness
  • CV System – shock, heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, ECG’s and arrhythmias, hypo/hypertension
  • Respiratory System – respiratory failure, restrictive lung disease, obstructive lung disease, ventilation
  • Renal System – fluid and electrolyte balance, acid base balance, renal failure, nephritic and nephritic syndrome
  • Endocrine System – hyper/hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency
  • Gastrointestinal System – upper GI disorders
  • Integumentary System
  • Reproductive System
  • Nervous System
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Immunology- physiology of the immune system, common immunologic disorders (anaphylaxis, lupus)
  • Haematology – anaemias, clotting disorders

How will I be assessed?

2 hour Written Examination – MCQ and Short Answer questions

Written assignment which identifies 5 cases drawn from the students own area of practice
