This course is appropriate for all those who wish to teach in a secondary school environment.

Each subject will contain specific vocational elements such as GCSE and vocational single and double awards VCE in addition to experience of related courses.
The SCITT/PGCE programme of training is an excellent, highly regarded qualification for new entrants onto teaching. Employment possibilities exist in secondary school and sixth form colleges. A professional teaching qualification is a requirement for teaching in the state secondary school sector.
This programme of training confers Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Developed by practitioners for practitioners, the course had been planned against the background of developments taking place in the secondary sector. The secondary school sector is seen as playing an important role in meeting the demands of a modern society which requires critical citizens and an educated, flexible and well trained workforce. There can rarely have been a more exciting time to train to teach in this sector.
The course is approved by the Teachers Training Agency and is validated by University of East Anglia.
Whilst on the programme students may be entitled to a DfES training bursary. This is paid in monthly instalments by the LEA for teaching training.

Essential:

Course Aims
The aims of the programme are to enable trainees to become competent, reflective and professional practitioners ready to make their contribution to teaching in the secondary school sector and to enable trainees to:

Engage in a reflective and practice based programme of training and to demonstrate that they have met the standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status

Develop a thorough grounding in the academic skills and knowledge that support the role and professional practice of teachers and to demonstrate that they have met the standards of the PGCE award

Provide an appropriate curriculum for all pupils in their care, taking into account their prior attainment and diversity of background

Practice Placement
Each trainee will be provided with teaching placements in two different schools. This placement will be negotiated and agreed with the SCITT Manager and the School.
QTS Skills Tests
QTS Skills Tests in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT are set by the TTA. It is the responsibility of the trainee to register and submit themselves for these tests. Trainees have more than one opportunity to pass these tests but must achieve a Pass before they can be awarded the PGCE and QTS.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Assessment is entirely by coursework and the assessment of practical teaching.
Trainees must:

Complete their teaching placement to a satisfactory standard. This will be based on the observation of practice and maintaining a satisfactory record of attendance, punctuality and professional conduct

Achieve pass grades in the assessment requirements for all other assignments
Teaching Practice
Practical teaching is a crucial part of the programme, and takes place in each of the three terms. All teaching placements will be based in secondary schools within Suffolk and Norfolk.
Each student will be supported by a subject mentor drawn from the trainees’ subject discipline.
This programme is designed to provide excellent opportunities for trainees to engage in a experiential learning process. Trainees will practice within the real live context of secondary schools and develop their skills and knowledge programme places great emphasis on trainees developing skills of critical analysis, synthesis and reflection.

Timetable
Trainees will be expected to spend the majority of course time within school placements
Course Delivery
The course is a full-time one year course. The course runs from early September until July. Trainees are expected to be available during normal school hours, five day a week, including the possibility of contributing to after school activities.
The trainee experience is one year in duration, delivered over three terms. Trainees will normally be expected to participate in teaching 35 weeks during the year.
Placements / Work-Based Learning / Work Experience

Tutorial and Study Support
Teaching and support staff are drawn from very experienced teachers currently working within the partnership schools as well as the expert advisory staff located within both Suffolk and Norfolk Local Education Authorities and Suffolk College.
In accordance with the College policy, all students have a personal tutor, with whom they are entitled to four twenty minute personal tutorials during the year. Beyond this formal entitlement, mentors and subject leader are available for private consultation by appointment.
Dedicated academic tutorial time throughout the programme will be allocated to focus on students’ study skills needs and course related issues.
Opportunities on Completion of the Course
The vast majority of trainees gain their first teaching post in the Eastern Region after the successful completion of the SCITT year.
