Rationale
The ability to respond appropriately to advances in knowledge and technology, as well as economic, legislative, regulatory and professional requirements is considered a central tenet of the health and social care practitioners’ role. This open format module enables students to plan a professional development experience of specific relevance to their current professional role in practice. It is expected that the focus for work-based learning activity will be to enhance and develop practice with current health and social care agendas.
The use of a ‘learning agreement’ will enable each student to negotiate clear outcomes and specify evidence to support learning achievements within the time allowance. There is a choice of assessment mode enabling the option of practice competence development.
When two Work Based Learning modules are completed within the programme of study they must demonstrate progression/significant differences, for example WBL 1: Written Report; WBL 2: Professional Role Development Portfolio.
Aims of the Module
-
To provide the student with an opportunity to demonstrate motivation and commitment to a specified practice/ professional development.
-
To engage in comprehensive enquiry with an identified aspect of their professional practice with a desire for effective practice.
-
To extend opportunities for critical self-evaluation.
-
Where appropriate, to achieve specified competencies in the work place.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
-
Organise documentary evidence to clearly convey the processes undertaken and what has been achieved.
-
Critically appraise contemporary literature.
-
Critically review the effect and implementation of government policies affecting current practice
-
Critically analyse the actions and reactions experienced by self/others throughout the developmental process.
-
Provide rigorous self-evaluation of the processes and outcomes of the developmental experience.
Assessment
Formative
A series of bite sized formative assessments through the course of this module reviewed by self, peer and academic will contribute to achievement of the learning outcomes of the module.
The diagram below indicates the staged formative assessment process and the relationship between this module and The Effective Practitioner module that runs concurrently in year one.
In WBL2 the formative assessments will be determined in negotiation with the module leader and personal tutor and form part of the learning agreement. The assessment option chosen should enable further development and enhancement of practice to meet current health care agendas.
