Rationale

This module focuses on the knowledge and skills of the leader to develop services and use innovative methods in practice to enable teams to challenge fundamental assumptions about current and future care delivery.

This requires the health and social care leader to ensure that patients, clients and other stakeholders are at the very heart of healthcare delivery (DH 2005, DH 2008) and that they can effectively manage the balance between strategy and implementation to achieve the transformation of services and enhance organisational performance.

More than ever before the NHS has to achieve financial balance whilst delivering the best possible quality to ensure that patients get the greatest benefit (DH 2010).

Aims of the Module

  • To critically analyse the range of techniques available to develop service innovation in healthcare.
  • To engage with patients, clients and communities to ensure that services are developed in partnership and are responsive and flexible.
  • To translate evidence into practice to ensure services are of high quality and responsive to need.
  • To lead and manage the transformation of services.

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student will be able to:

  • Critically analyse and evaluate the role of healthcare leaders and managers in service development and innovation in a changing policy context.
  • Critically evaluate different approaches to service development and innovation and assess their relevance and usefulness in a variety of organisational contexts.
  • Evaluate the methods of promoting and implementing evidence-based decision-making.

Evaluate the communication and interpersonal skills required to achieve service development, change and innovation within a health and social care environment.
