The module will begin with a two day workshop where students will participate in a series of activities designed to explore leadership and receive one to one feedback about their leadership behaviours and actions. This will be followed by a series of 2 hourly seminars (6 seminars in total) with a mixture of web based and facilitated learning.

Rationale
Effective leadership is crucial for improving the quality of care for patients, clients and their families, for developing staff and for creating the vision to transform services (Department of Health 2006, 2008). Effective leadership begins with greater self knowledge and this module will take the student on a journey of self assessment, reflection and discovery in order to determine their approach to leadership and develop their effectiveness in providing direction and leading and managing others.
Aims of the Module

To critically examine the body of historical and contemporary theory to inform the role of leadership in health and social care.

To critically analyse the contextual nature of legislative and political processes which inform and underpin social policy formulation

To provide the student with the opportunity to evaluate their own behaviours and personal qualities in relation to effective leadership.

To enable students to develop personal effectiveness in leadership.

To consider the importance of building capacity in others to develop leadership and innovation throughout the organisation.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:

Critically appraise the leadership and innovation challenge of the role of the health and social care leader/manager.

Critically examine their leadership behaviours and formulate a personal development plan.

Critically analyse the role of healthcare leaders and managers in a changing policy context.

Evaluate effective strategies for supporting and developing others to build leaderful teams to meet service and clinical priorities.
Assessment
Formative
Initial completion of a 360 leadership effectiveness analysis will provide an opportunity for one to one feedback. This will identify the strengths of the student's leadership and their areas for development.
Summative
4000 words critical evaluation weighting 100%
Using the 360 degree feedback, the student will critically evaluate the leadership challenges of their role and formulate a personal development plan.
