Rationale

Students will critically analyse and evaluate an area of their teaching practice in their own setting. Current influences on teaching and learning will be examined and then applied to this chosen setting. In order to achieve this practitioners are required to be proactive in their learning and that of others and be critically aware of the current climate in higher education in the health and social care setting and the changes that impact on their area of practice from an educational perspective.

The module will examine current policies and dilemmas facing those involved in the delivery of health and social care education. By examining these wider issues, practitioners will broaden their knowledge base. In turn, this will help inform their decision-making in practice/educational settings. The uniqueness of this module is that it enables students to develop their awareness of wider cultural, organisational and policy influences on teaching and learning in the practice/education environment they are familiar with. This will enable students to address challenges inherent in twenty-first century mass and global higher education for health and social care.

The module explores aspects of quality in education; what this means at an institutional level and for the student's area of practice and will explicitly include issues to promote cultural literacy.

Aims of the module

  • To enable the student to formulate a coherent argument based on a critical evaluation of their approach to education, teaching and learning in a specific practice/educational setting.

  • To critically analyse the nature of current policies, both legislative and professional, which inform and underpin health and social care education.

  • To enable the student to identify high quality and effective solutions to improve the learner experience in educational settings in their own area of practice.

  • To enable the student to develop cultural literacy, in order to enhance the educational experience of learners in a learning environment.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:

  • Clearly identify and critically evaluate knowledge from diverse sources that contribute to enhancement of education and learning in the specific setting negotiated by the student.

  • Embrace cultural diversity and social values into future directions for teaching and learning in specific settings.

  • Demonstrate personal and professional development through critical, analytical, reflective and evaluatory study at master's level.

  • Critically analyse the nature of legislative and political processes which inform and underpin health and social care education.

  • Critically appraise contemporary literature in relation to implementing innovative education opportunities.

  • Consider what constitutes quality in terms of education and to relate this to their specific setting.
