Learning and Teaching: Theory in Practice

Rationale

This module is compulsory and underpins the master programme. It will enable those involved in education to critically develop their theoretical knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning thereby underpinning their professional practice.

The module includes a comprehensive review of theories of learning and development with particular emphasis on their relevance to classroom practice. This module takes the view that there is no single, adequate account of the learning process; instead, it considers the nature of learning from a variety of perspectives, drawing on different models and disciplines.

Students will critically analyse and evaluate theory, policy and practice and any proposed developments in education. It incorporates four key elements: philosophy of education, the learner, the teacher and educational practice.

As well as engaging with key, current issues in teaching and learning, students will engage with a variety of teaching/learning methods and reflect critically on their own practice and previous experience as a learner and a teacher.
