Visiting Professor of Public Policy
School of Applied Social Sciences
Hugh Bochel is Professor of Public Policy at the University of Lincoln. He has wide ranging research and teaching interests in both politics and social policy. While some elements of his work fall clearly into each of those subject areas, in recent years aspects of his research and teaching have developed to reflect the congruence of politics and social policy, particularly around the policy process and the politics of social policy. This has been evident in publications such as
The UK Social Policy Process (2004), with Catherine Bochel, and
Making Policy in Theory and Practice (2007), edited with Sue Duncan, and his research on parliament, including
Welfare Policy under New Labour (2007), with Andrew Defty.
His recent and current research includes a study of parliament and welfare policy (funded by the Nuffield Foundation), editing a book on
The Conservative Party and Social Policy, published by The Policy Press in 2011, and a project looking at parliamentary scrutiny of the intelligence and security services (funded by The Leverhulme Trust).
Professor Bochel is managing co-editor of the journal
Social Policy and Society, and is also one of the lead contributors to the textbook,
Social Policy: Themes, Issues and Debates, published by Pearson. He is a member of the Research Excellence Framework panel that will assess the quality of research in Social Policy and Social Work for 2014.
