Visiting Professor of Social Policy

Dr Ellen Kuhlmann is spending the spring term as an invited Guest Professor in the Department of Political Science, University of Aarhus, Denmark. Previously she has been a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social and Policy Sciences, University of Bath, UK, and in the academic year 2009-10 a Professor of Social Structure and Social Policy at Goethe-University Frankfurt, Germany. She was also a visiting fellow at McMaster University, Canada, the Open University, Norwegian Social Research (NOVA), and Kaohsiung Medical University, Institute of Gender Studies, Taiwan.
She holds a PhD in Sociology and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Bielefeld and received her ‘Habilitation’ from the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Bremen, Germany, with a thesis entitled Modernising Health Care: Reinventing Professions, the State and the Public (2006, Policy Press). Trained as a nurse with specialisation in intensive care and anaesthesiology she also has extensive experience in clinical practice. Her research interests are at the interface of sociology and social policy with a focus on international comparative studies and the health sector including: health systems and policy; professions and health human resource management; the organisation and management of care; gender mainstreaming policies and public health.
Ellen Kuhlmann is currently Vice-President of the European Sociological Association (ESA), where she is chairing the Research Network Council and representing ESA in new emergent European science policy networks. She is also President-elect of the International Sociological Association (ISA) Research Committee 52 ‘Sociology of Professional Groups’; member of the Executive of ISA Research Committee 15 'Health'; and member of the Management Committee of the EU FP7 COST Action, ‘Enhancing the role of medicine in the management of European health systems’, currently chairing Working Group 2 on ‘Control’. Other professional responsibilities include membership of the Editorial Board of the international journals Social Policy and Administration and Management and Marketing in Healthcare and the scientific Advisory Board of the German Journal Physiotherapie.
She has published in journals such as European Journal of Social Policy, Policy and Politics, Current Sociology, European Societies, the International Journal of Clinical Practice, and co-edited a Policy Brief of the Health Evidence Network WHO Europe. She is has co-edited Rethinking Professional Governance: International Directions in Healthcare (with Professor Mike Saks, Policy Press, 2008) and The Palgrave Handbook of Gender and Healthcare (with Ellen Annandale, Palgrave, 2010; second edition, 2012, now available in paperback: http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=580540) and a thematic issue ‘Transformations in health services and policy: New international directions’ in the Monograph Series of Current Sociology (with Ellen Annandale, June 2012).
