Dr John Greenacre was in the Army for 24 years. As a helicopter pilot he deployed on operations during the Gulf War, to the Balkans and Northern Ireland. He has also worked in Germany, Canada, the Falkland Islands and Kenya in areas from procurement to arms control. John achieved an MA in Military Studies from Cranfield (the Royal Military College of Science) in 2003. He was awarded his PhD in History from the University of Leeds in 2008.
John has been an occasional lecturer at UCS since Spring 2010 and contributes lectures to a variety of modules throughout the year.

Research Interests and Publications:
John is a military historian, author and battlefield guide. He is the author of 'Churchill's Spearhead' (Pen & Sword 2010) and a contributor to 'Allied Fighting Effectiveness in the Mediterranean 1940-1944' (Brill 2010) and has written many articles for various historical periodicals. John is badged member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides (Badge No. 44). Over the past 10 years he has guided numerous battlefield tours across Europe. He has led groups from school children to NATO 4 star headquarters staff. His tours include the Western Front during the First World War, the Fall of France 1940, Dieppe 1942, Sicily 1943, Normandy 1944 and the Rhine Crossings 1944/45. He has also guided tours in Malta covering the island's military history from the Ottoman Siege of 1565 to the Pedestal Convoy in 1942.
John is currently developing new battlefield tours including the Second World War Home Front based in East Anglia. He is writing a new book based on the Second World War letters of three brothers and is working with Battlefield History TV to produce a documentary on Operation MARKET GARDEN.
