Ms Celia Edey, Member of Council, University of Essex

Celia Edey was Chairman of the Essex Magistrates Courts Committee (EMCC) from 1999 – 2005. Prior to that she was deputy Chairman from 1995 – 1999 alongside being Chairman of the Training sub-committee (staff and magistrate) over this same time frame. The EMCC was the authority with statutory responsibility for the efficient and effective administration of Magistrates Courts for the County of Essex, including buildings, staff, training, administration and performance. The Committee acted as a non-executive Board, supported by a Chief Executive, Senior Management team with overall responsibility for strategy, governance, audit and probity of the organisation. As part of her role Celia represented Essex on the National governing body for MCC’s and played an influential role in response to government review of the administration of all courts.

Celia has also been heavily involved with the British Lung Foundation. From 1986 – 1998 she was Trustee/Non-Executive Director, prior to this she was Chairman of Fund-raising Events from 1985 – 1997 and a member of Ethics sub-committee from 1994 – 1997.

Celia has been involved with numerous voluntary and paid ventures including Trustee and Governor for Royal Eastern Counties Schools, Deputy Chairman to the Chelmsford Prison Visitor Centre, Founding Trustee of the Romilly Forshall Foundation which was set up relieve suffering of children in distress in Africa and a member of the Family Proceedings Panel which dealt with child protection cases. Celia was also a member of the Essex Probation Board and Chairman of the Anglia Holiday Games Club. She started her early career in PR and advertising
