Live Aid nurse to speak at exhibition

Jan 25 2012 11:00AM

Dame Claire Bertschinger, the nurse who inspired Live Aid, will be talking about her experiences at UCS on the evening of Wednesday 1 February 2012. Dame Claire will be speaking at the opening of the Gandhi-King-Ikeda peace-builders exhibition, which will be on display at UCS Waterfront Building| until 11 February.

This exhibition celebrates the lives of three heroes of non-violence – the leader of India’s independence movement, Mohandas Gandhi; the American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jnr; and the president of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Daisaku Ikeda – and has been viewed by over a million people worldwide.

It was created by Morehouse College where Martin Luther King was educated. Col. James Durant, whose ancestors’ story was told in the Roots TV series, will also be speaking at the opening.

The exhibition is being staged jointly by UCS, the lay Buddhist organisation SGI, and Suffolk Inter-Faith Resource (SIFRE).

Janus van Helvert, a local member of SGI said: “The exhibition promotes the ideas and spirit of people who fought against the odds to make positive change in society. Dame Claire’s life exemplifies this spirit so we’re very fortunate to have her speak at the opening. We hope those who visit will be inspired to make a difference in their own environment.”

The exhibition is open to the public and free to attend. Free tickets for the opening are available here|.
