An exhibition from the winner of the 2009 UCS Alumni Award officially marked the opening of the newly located Waterfront Gallery at the UCS Ipswich Campus.
The space at the UCS Waterfront Building, which previously featured an privately run food hall, has recently been renovated for a new Waterfront Gallery and Student Union Café, Theta.
On Monday 6 September, the Waterfront Gallery was launched with a private viewing of an exhibition entitled ‘Paintings and Drawings 1950 – 2010’ by UCS graduate Gill Thomas. The exhibition is open to the public from 7 September to 24 September.
Gill trained at Birmingham College of art in the early 50's and worked initially as an illustrator in advertising and publishing in London. After combining a career in education with bringing up her family, she took her BA (Hons) in Fine Art and History and Theory of Visual Art at Suffolk College, graduating in 2008 as part of the first graduating cohort of UCS.
Oil portraits have become the main focus of her recent work and she recently held a successful exhibition at Peter Peers Gallery in Aldeburgh and is now represented by the Re + New Gallery in Woodbridge.
Gill spent eight years on the part-time course originally held at Suffolk College and in the autumn of 2009 submitted work for the alumni exhibition. “I entered a portrait and was delighted to win the UCS Alumni Award which offered exhibiting space at this gallery as part of the prize- hence this retrospective show.”
“When gathering together work for this exhibition I came across some rather battered pieces from the start of my career in the 50’s. David Baldry, Course Leader of Fine Art at UCS, who had been my tutor throughout my college course, was interested in these early pieces and, at his suggestion; they now form an introductory part of this show”.
