UCS is delighted to present ‘Class of...’ the first of two exhibitions organised in conjunction with the Ipswich School of Art Gallery to bring together the work of those who taught and studied at the Ipswich Art School.
The first exhibition will showcase the work of tutors from the Ipswich Art School and takes place in the Waterfront Gallery at the UCS Waterfront Building in Ipswich from 3 February - 26 February. A second exhibition will feature work from previous students and will run from 11 March - 2 April.
The exhibition is in collaboration with Colchester and Ipswich Museum who have reopened the site of the old art school at High Street. They will be exhibiting a show of past tutors and students which is drawn predominantly from the Ipswich Borough Council’s collections, while UCS has also tracked down artists not represented in this collection but who are none the less significant artists. These artists made a significant contribution to the lives of many students who studied at the Ipswich Art School.
David Baldry, Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts and Humanities at UCS, said: "We are very much aware of our heritage here and see our work as a continuum of the highly regarded pedagogical practice that went before. We believe passionately in the value and importance of cultural excellence and continue to strive to encourage new generations of artists as they pass through our doors.”
Part of the ambition for these exhibitions at UCS is to help the school find more of those who taught or indeed studied at the Ipswich Art School.
David added: “We would be very interested to hear from visitors to the exhibitions of anyone that they know of who was associated with the Ipswich Art School. This will help us complete the ‘roll call’. We would also be interested to hear from those who have photographs, other historical artefacts or reminiscences to which they would be happy to give us access and share.”
Exhibitions are open Monday to Friday, 9am - 8pm and Saturday, 11am - 3pm. Subject to change.
